Baseball Falls To Plymouth State On Senior Day
Leicester, Mass- Becker College finished their regular season with a 17-10 loss to Plymouth State in men's baseball action.
Plymouth State got the scoring started in the first inning on an RBI single from Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass) Becker tied the score in the bottom of the first when Dan Briand (Northbridge, Mass) scored from third base on a Plymouth State fielding error. The Panthers added their second run in the top of the second when Aaron Sayad (Chicago, IL) uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn) to score from third.
Plymouth State widened their lead in the top of the third with four runs. Mike Cappiello (Westfield, NJ) got things started with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, RI) from second base. After another wild pitch, Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass) singled to left field, scoring Cappiello from second base. With two outs and two on, Matt Koban (Bradford, NH) drove in both runs with an RBI double to right field, making the score 6-1.
The Hawks put up their second run of the game in the bottom of the third. Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass) led off the inning with a single to centerfield; which was misplayed allowing Corey to scamper all the way to third base. Dan Briand followed with a ground ball to the right side allowing Corey to score from third.
In the fifth inning the Panthers blew the game open with five runs. After a walk and a stolen base from Grant Livingston, Matt Koban drove him home with a single to center. The Panthers loaded the bases with two outs when Anthony Vadala (Medford, Mass) earned a walk, making the score 8-2. Mike Cappiello capped of the inning with a bases clearing double, upping the Plymouth lead to 11-2.
Plymouth tacked on two more runs in the six when Nick Englert (North Woodstock, VT) hit a bases loaded single to right field.
Becker answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs of their own. Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL) led off the inning with a single. Josue Lopez (Manchester, Conn) followed with a double over the center fielders head, pushing Ceglarek to third. Frank Vaccaro (Shrewsbury, Mass) grounded out to the first baseman, allowing Ceglarek to score from third. Weston Meehan (Thomson, GA) drove in Lopez from third with a ground ball to the shortstop, making the score 13-4.
Mike Cappiello drove in his fifth run of the day when he drove a tape measure homerun over the right field fence, putting Plymouth up 14-4.
Becker made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth when they scored six runs. Dan Briand led off the inning with a triple to left center. Jim Ceglarek followed with a double to left, scoring Briand. After an error and a walked loaded the bases, Weston Meehan earned an RBI walk, making the score 14-6. Geoff Sinnott Jr pulled the Hawks within striking distance with a grand slam to deep center field.
The Hawks couldn't pull off their second straight day of ninth inning heroics as Nick Englert shut the door in the ninth
Aaron Sayad took the loss for the Hawks (14-14-1). Bryant Lausberg (Smomersworth, NH) pitched seven strong innings to earn the win for Plymouth State (17-23)
