Becker Hosts Its Second Annual Senior Athlete Awards Dinner

Leicester, Mass.- On Thursday, May 6th, the Becker College Athletics department held their second annual Senior Athlete Awards Dinner at the Leicester Country Club.

Approximately 38 student athletes from 16 different sports were honored for their contributions to Becker College athletics.

Four major awards were handed out during the evenings events. Becker College Director of Sports Information and Assistant Baseball Coach Matt Tittle presented L.J. Blomgren with the Gene R. Alley Sportsmanship Award. The award is given to a student athlete who has constantly demonstrated a commitment of service for the betterment of Becker College Athletics. Blomgren was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, golf team, lacrosse team, hockey team and baseball team. 

Andrea Belis, the Coordinator of Student Athlete Services and Head Women’s Volleyball Coach followed with the presentation of the Scholar Athlete of the Year. This year’s recipient was senior women’s basketball player Courtney Fiske. Fisk not only excelled on the court but in the classroom, earning an honorable GPA as a pre-vet major.  Fiske will be attending veterinary school in Ireland next fall.

The final awards of the evening were the male and female Athlete of the Year Awards. The Female Athlete of the Year was presented to three sport athlete Shannon Tibbetts. Tibbetts excelled at soccer, basketball and softball during her three and one half years at the college. During her time at Becker College Tibbetts played in 452 games, while graduating with highest honors in sports management. Tibbetts was presented her award by head women’s basketball coach Karen Powell.

The Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to ice hockey captain Jim Ceglarek. Ceglarek played in 96 career games for the hockey team, scoring eight goals and 34 assists as a defenseman. Ceglarek was also a member of the baseball team for three seasons. Head hockey coach Steve Hoar called Ceglarek a “ leader, a captain and a warrior.” Hoar finished his award presentation by saying “the team will miss you, I will miss you, and Becker College will miss you.”

  Athletic Director Frank Millerick finished off the festivities by thanking the parents of the student athletes for their support over the last four years.
