Baseball Splits With Mitchell

Worcester, Mass.- Mitchell College received a complete game two-hitter from Jeremy Chapman (Waterford, Conn.) as the Mariners defeated Becker College 5-0 in game one of their New England Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader.

The Mariners got all the runs they needed in the top of the first inning when Ethan Graynor (Leonia, NJ.) hit a two run homerun to deep right centerfield. The Mariners put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth when they plated two more runs. Michael Berthiaume (Brooklyn, Conn.) earned a bases loaded walk, making the score 3-0. Mitchell Made the score 4-0 when Tommy Derosier (Brooklyn, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield.

Errick Maddern (West Haven, Conn.) took the loss for the Hawks after pitching a complete game, allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

In game two the Becker pounded out 13 hits as the Hawks defeated Mitchell 13-2.  Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) carried the Hawks with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI’s.  Freshman Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in with two hits and three RBI’s.  In the bottom of the sixth inning Kyle Beede (Auburn, Mass.) hit his first collegiate homerun over the right centerfield fence.

Joe Franchi (Millbury, Mass.) improved to 4-2 on the season after pitching seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. With the doubleheader split Becker’s record now stands at 10-14 overall and 6-5 in the New England Collegiate Conference.

With the loss Garrett Cornwell (Oxford, Conn.) fell to 3-2 on the season. The Mariners are now 12-11 overall and 7-4 in the New England Collegiate Conference. The two teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at Mitchell College.
