HARTFORD, Conn.- The Becker College baseball team split their New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Elms College Sunday morning at Trinity College. The Blazers of Elms College took game one 5-4 before the Hawks of Becker College walked off with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
The split moves the Hawks record to 9-5 (4-1 NECC) while the Blazers slide to 4-9 (1-1 NECC).
The Blazers would take the lead in the top of the third when they tagged Becker starting pitcher Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.) for four runs. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Ventres uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Dan Brunetti (Enfield, Conn.) to scamper home with the tying run. With runners on second and third, Kyle Platner (Northfield, Mass.) cleared the bases with a single, giving the Blazers a 3-1 advantage. Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) capped off the inning with an RBI double into the right centerfield gap to up the Elms Lead to 4-1.
Becker would cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI single from Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) in the bottom of the third.
The Blazers tacked on a run in top of the fourth on some fielding miscues from the Becker defense to give Elms a 5-2 lead.
Becker pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth on another Chris Testa RBI single to make the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Testa led off the inning with a triple to left. After T.J. Sempkowski (Oceanport, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4, Elms closer Kyle Platner struck out the next two batters to preserve the victory for the Blazers.
Elms starting pitcher Jacob Graveline (Palmer, Mass.) earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits, over four and a third innings of work. Planter earned his second save of the season after getting the final four outs of the game.
Tanyon Ventres suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four earned runs in six innings of work.
The nightcap turned into a pitching duel between Becker starter Tyler Wagar (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Elms hurler Matt Plasse (Westfield, Mass.).
Becker was able to scratch out a run in the bottom of the third on a pair of errors by the Elms defense. Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) made his way aboard on a throwing error. When Josiah Shpeherd (Providence, R.I.) followed with a groundout to third base, Diaz aggressively tried to go from first to third. The throw back across the diamond sailed down the left field line, allowing Diaz to trot home with the first run of the game.
The Blazers were held scoreless until they plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage. With the bases loaded with two out, Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) gave Elms the lead when he drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tanyon Ventres got the inning started for the Hawks with a leadoff walk. With pinch runner Samuel Derico (Latham, N.Y.) standing on first base, senior Trevor Read (Colorado Springs, Colo.) perfectly executed the hit and run with a single through the right side of the infield, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. Daniel Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Derico with the game winning run.
Tyler Wager improved his record to 2-1 on the year after allowing two runs on four hits in a complete game victory.
