FRANKLIN, Mass.- The Becker College baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Dean College on Saturday afternoon with scores of 10-7 and 11-6. The sweep evens the Bulldogs record to 12-12 while the Hawks sink to 11-13 on the year.
Becker jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I) and Vaibhav Desai (Waltham, Mass.) started the game with back-to-back walks. After a Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) flyout put runners on the corners, the Hawks executed a double steal as Shepherd scampered home from third. Desai would eventually make his way home when the attempt to throw him out on steal of third sailed into left field.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the second when they plated four runs on just two hits as the Hawks committed three errors in the inning.
After Dean added three more runs in the bottom of the third, the Hawks chipped their way back into the game with two runs in the top of the fourth. After Niko Bedell (Manorville, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single, Nicholas Harriman (Harrisville, R.I.) smacked a homerun over the centerfield fence, cutting the Hawks deficit to 7-4.
After the two teams exchanged tallies in the fifth, the Hawks pulled themselves within one when they scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Freshman Michael Martinez (Raleigh, N.C.) started the inning with a leadoff walk. After Martinez made his way to second on a stolen base, Josiah Shepherd drove him home with a single into left field. On Shepherd's single, the ball bounced away from the Dean outfielder, allow him to make his way to third base. Christopher LaDou (Worcester, Mass.) brought the Hawks within a run when he scored Shepherd with a suicide squeeze.
The Bulldogs added a couple insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final 10-7.
Vaibhav Desai took the loss after allowing allowed seven runs in two innings of work.
The Hawks jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Niko Bedell blasted his fourth homerun of the season.
After the Bulldogs scored three runs in in the bottom of the second, the Hawks battled back with two in the top the third. With two Hawks in scoring position, Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I.) delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 3-3.
Dean took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third when Conor Callery belted a homerun over the left field fence. The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 6-3 in on a John Cerretani two-run single in the fourth.
Becker cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the fifth when Chris Testa and T.J. Sempkowski hit back-to-back homeruns.
The Hawks tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Testa RBI single to center, scoring Josiah Shepherd.
Dean would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth when they scored five runs.
Michael Iacovelli (Uxbridge, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Hawks after allowing four runs in an inning and two-thirds.
Becker returns to action on Tuesday, April 18th with an NECC road tilt at Elms beginning at 7:00 p.m.
