LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College baseball team rallied to defeat visiting Southern Vermont College, 6-5 in extra innings, in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown on Thursday at Rochdale Park.
The Mountaineers of Southern Vermont (7-24, 5-8 NECC), playing as the "home" team in the lineup, got on the board first in the bottom of the first when freshman Anthony LaBella (Exeter, N.H./Exeter HS) hit an RBI single to left. Then in the bottom of the second, junior Niko D'Agnese (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac HS) singled up the middle as the visitors took a two-run lead. In the third, junior John Arancio (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional HS) singled to right to drive in another run as the Mountaineers went ahead 3-0. Finally, in the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) and junior Luigi Magliocca (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth HS) both had RBI singles, giving the visitors a five run advantage.
Trailing by five going into the top of the seventh, the Hawks of Becker (17-15, 10-5 NECC), playing as the "away" team in the lineup, rallied. Senior Nick Harriman (Harrisville, R.I. / Burrillville) got it started with an RBI double to left center to score sophomore Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I. / West Warwick). Two batters later, senior Trevor Read (Colorado Springs, Colo. / St. Mary's) singled to center to drive home senior Niko Bedell (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport-South Manor). Two batters later and with two outs, the Hawks capitalized on a Mountaineer error, allowing Harriman and Read to score and pulling Becker to within a single run, 5-4.
In the top of the eighth, the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs when junior catcher Kevin Perez (Jersey City, N.J. / Union City) came to the plate and singled to center, scoring Barrera from third and tying the game at 5-5.
Finally, in the top of the tenth inning, Becker senior shortstop T.J. Sempkowski (Oceanport, N.J. / Shore) came to the plate and launched a solo home run to right center to give Becker their first lead of the day. The 6-5 score held up as the Hawks took their fifth win in six games.
Becker junior pitcher Christopher LaDou (Worcester, Mass. / Burncoat) picked up the win, coming in in relief to pitch one and two-thirds shutout innings. For Southern Vermont, senior Dylan Angelo (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam HS) had five strikeouts in seven innings, allowing just two unearned runs.
Up next for the Becker Hawks, the team travels to Lesley University for a conference double-header on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. The Southern Vermont Mountaineers play at Mitchell College in their next game, also in a Saturday double-header beginning at noon.
