Baseball Falls To Lesley On Senior Day

ROCHDALE, Mass.-  The Becker College baseball team fell to Lesley University 5-4 in New England Collegiate Conference action Sunday afternoon at Rochdale Park. The loss drops the Hawks record to 18-17 (11-7 NECC) while the Lynx improve to 18-15-1 (9-8 NECC).

Prior to the game, Becker College honored the ten seniors on the baseball team.

Lesley jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. After Vincent Taliercio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led off the game with a double, Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, Mass.) smacked a two-run homerun over the left field fence to put the Lynx in front 2-0. A Justin Clark (Chino Hills, Calif.) sacrifice fly would score Matthew Warner (San Diego, Calif.) to cap off the three-run inning.

The Hawks got back in the game when they took advantage of three Lesley errors in the bottom of the second, cutting the deficit to 3-2. With two outs in the inning, Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.) made his way to second on a dropped fly ball in centerfield. Trevor Read (Colorado Springs, Colo.) would swap places with Bianco when a groundball went through the legs of the Lesley third baseman. After a dropped pop fly by the Lesley catcher put runners on the corners, Kevin Perez (Jersey City, N.J.) singled to left field to make the score 3-2.

The Lynx would get both runs back in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage. J.P. Agiorgousis (Hanscom AFB, Mass.) started the inning when he reached base on a hit by pitch. Justin Clark drove in Agiorgousis from first with a double into the left centerfield gap. After Clark advanced to third on a fly out by Jacob Cervantes (Oxnard, Calif.), Will Rhone (North Haven, Conn.) plated Clark with a sacrifice fly to right field.

In the bottom of the fifth the skies opened, delaying the game for 53 minutes.

The Hawks would creep back into the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I.) led off the inning with a triple into the left centerfield gap. Nick Harriman would drive in Barrera with a single to center, cutting the Becker deficit to 5-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lesley got two quick outs before the Hawks put together a rally. T.J. Sempkowski (Oceanport, N.J.) got the inning started with a walk. Evan Barrera followed with a single through the left side of the infield. When Sempowski tried to go from first to third on the hit, the attempt to cut him down sailed out of play, allowing him to trot home. Lesley relief pitcher Tom Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) ended the inning when he got Niko Bedell (Manorville, N.Y.) to groundout to second to end the ballgame.

Jeff Heinz (Portsmouth, N.Y.) earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief.  Tom Muratore earned his third career save after recording the final four outs of the game.

Sean Simas (Cambridge, Mass.) suffered the loss after allowing a pair of earned runs in two innings of work. Jorge Grullon (Worcester, Mass.) kept the Hawks in the game after striking out five batter in three innings of scoreless relief.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, May 2nd. The Lynx will wrap up NECC action when they host Elms College at 3:30 p.m. Becker will host Worcester State in a non-conference battle at 4:00 p.m.
