NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.- The Becker College baseball team opened the 2018 season with a sweep of Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference action Saturday evening at the New England Baseball Complex. Becker took the first game 6-3, before capturing the nightcap 7-1.
The sweep lifts the Hawks record to 2-0 (2-0 NECC), while the Nighthawks slide to 3-2 (0-2 NECC.
In game one, Becker jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. After Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I.) led off the game with a single and freshman Coby Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) walked, Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) put the Hawks on the board with an RBI single. Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.) capped off the inning with a two-run double down the right field line.
Becker would increase their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning. A Willis Pollard (Worthington, Mass.) single and a Cameron Plank (Marlborough, Mass.) double put a pair of runners in scoring position to start the inning. Coby Hussey would plate Pollard with a groundout to the right side of the infield.
A couple fielding miscues by Becker in the bottom of the second allowed the Nighthawks to cut the deficit to 4-1.
The scored remained the same until the Hawks added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two runners in scoring position, Coby Hussey drove in his second run of the game with another RBI groundout. Chris Testa followed with an RBI single to put the Hawks in front 6-1.
The Nighthawks were able to scrape across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting, but senior Michael Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) got the final two outs of the inning to preserve the 6-3 victory.
Junior southpaw Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) earned the win after tossing the first six and a third innings without allowing an earned run, while striking out six Nighthawks.
