Football Drops Opener To Utica
Leicester, Mass. – Utica College’s sophomore quarterback Andrew Benkwitt (Mamaroneck, NY) threw for 255 yards and 2 touchdown and the team had 528 total offensive yards as the Pioneers defeated Becker College 78-19 in NCAA Division III football action today at Alumni Field. Utica starts the season 1-0, as Becker drops to 0-1.
Utica held a 47-7 halftime lead as they opened the game with 38 unanswered points.
Sophomore running back Jake Scott (Rochester, NY) scored on a one yard run with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter for the first score of the year for Utica. Logan Jandrew (New York Mills, NY) made the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Benkwitt tossed his first touchdown as he hit Jeremy Meier (Rome, NY) in stride just 90 seconds into the second quarter. With the Jandrew kick it was quickly 14-0.
Next it was the defenses turn to get on the board when senior cornerback Tom Nanna (Marcy, NY) intercepted a Bobby Baker (Monroe, Conn.) pass at the Becker 34 yard line and ran it in for the 20-0 lead.
Utica then added back-to-back 2-yard runs by Scott and Chris Cobb (Syracuse, NY), with the extra points the lead now 38-0.
Becker finally broke the goal line on a beautiful sideline pass from freshman quarterback William Ramirez (Bethel, Conn.) to Curtis Ludden (Leominster, Mass.) for a 73 yard touchdown reception.
Utica finished out the first half with a Joshua Mason (Schenectady, NY) 8 yard touchdown from Benkwitt for a 45-7 lead.
The Pioneers opened up the second half with a 40 yard touchdown interception by cornerback Robert Alexander (Dobbs Ferry, NY) to increase the lead to 52-7.
Becker’s Paul Casimir (Miami, FL) gave the Hawks 13 points on the board with a 4 yard touchdown run.
The Pioneers added another twenty-six points to make the final 78-19.
Leaders for the Hawks were Casimir with 48 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Ramirez who was 7-for-11 for 111 yards a touchdown and an interception.
The Pioneers were led by Scott with 104 yards and 3 touchdowns, Cobbs finished with 27 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Acevedo had 69 yards receiving and quarterback Jared Keyte (Holland Patent, NY) was 9-for-10 with 102 yards and a touchdown with the second string.
