PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University field hockey squad posted the first win in the history of the program with a 3-0 shutout victory against Becker College at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Outdoor Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when senior Bethany Barrar (Somerset, Mass.) tallied her first collegiate goal just 4:15 into the contest. The Wildcats added to their lead at the 13:11 mark as Courtney McTague (Saugus, Mass.) collected a loose ball and put a shot into the back of the net for her first career goal to put JWU up 2-0. The Wildcats had a 9-0 advantage in shots for the stanza.
Early in the second half Barrar tallied her second goal of the evening to propel the Wildcats to the 3-0 victory.
Junior Jaclyn Lyons (Hillsborough, N.J.) notched six stops in the win for the Wildcats while sophomore Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) tallied 12 saves in the setback for Becker.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 1-4 on the year while Becker falls to 0-3 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, September 13 when they travel to Thomas for a contest at 4:00 p.m.
