LEICESTER, Mass. – Salem State University defeated Becker College 8-0 in non conference women's field hockey action this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win lifts the Vikings to 3-2, while the Hawks fall to 0-6.
Salem State got on the board in the sixth minute when freshman Katie Pietrini (Beverly, Mass.) intercepted a pass in front of the Hawks net, sliding it past Becker goalie Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) for her third goal of the season. The Vikings added to their lead 9:32 into the first half when Nicole Bisbee (Templeton, Mass.) ripped a shot just past Gallo's right leg pad for a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later Lauren Pazdziorny put Salem State in front 3-0 with her team high, eighth goal of the season.
The Hawks had their chances in the first half, matching the Vikings seven shots. In the 29th minute Elizabeth McNiff (Leominster, Mass.) and Haley Ooms (Valatie, N.Y.) had back to back shots on net, but Salem State goalie Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) preserved the shutout.
Salem State freshman Natalia Bourne (Tewksbury, Mass.) tallied three goals in the second half for her first career hat-trick. Katie Pietrini added her second goal of the game and Maria Giuffrida (Leicester, Mass.) added a late goal to give the Vikings the 8-0 victory.
Carolyn Woodin made seven saves to earn her second win and first career shutout. Gabrielle Gallo turned away ten shots in a losing effort.
Salem State returns to action on Saturday, September 21 when they being MACAC action against Fitchburg State at 10:00 a.m. Becker will travel to Rivier College on Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m.
