LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College field hockey team lost 6-0 to visiting Salem State University on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Vikings of Salem State (1-4) scored first in the 18th minute when senior midfielder Courtney Kilgore (Wakefield, Mass. / Malden) caught the keeper out of position and scored her first goal of the season off a pass from freshman forward Vanessa Yavorski (Georgetown, Mass. / Georgetown). Just a minute and a half later, Kilgore returned the favor when Yavorski scored the first goal of her young career off a pass from the senior mid. In the 22nd minute, Yavorski scored again, this time off an assist to junior forward Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial). The with just 49.4 remaining in the period, Yavorski found senior defender Julia Klein (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) off a corner for Klein's second goal of the season. The Vikings entered halftime leading 4-0.
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, N.Y. / Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored off a pass from Kilgore in the 44th minute as the Vikings went ahead by five. Kilgore wrapped up the scoring with a strike in the 63rd minute.
The Hawks of Becker (0-4) were led by junior goalkeeper Alexis Barry (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) with 19 saves, two off her season high.
For the game, the Vikings outshot the Hawks, 38-3, with a 12-2 edge in corners.
Becker will be back on the field on Saturday when they host Colby-Sawyer University at 1:00 p.m. Salem State travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. LEC contest.
