Hanley’s hat trick gives Field Hockey first win

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College field hockey team won 4-2 over visiting Bay Path University on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester.

It took the Wildcats of Bay Path (0-11, 0-3 NECC) just 2:15 to get on the board, as sophomore midfielder Taryn Karol-Chik (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) scored off a two-on-one, assisted by junior forward Brittany LaCombe (West Springfield, Mass. / West Springfield) as Bay Path went up 1-0.

The Hawks of Becker (1-13, 1-1 NECC) tied it up in the 25th minute when junior forward Jocelyn Lebel (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) and put it in the back of the net.

Becker freshman defender Kayla Hanley (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) then took over with the first two goals of her collegiate career. In the 28th minute, Lebel found Hanley for the go-ahead score as the Hawks went up 2-1. Then with just over two minutes left before halftime, Hanley took it in herself, deflecting a shot off the goalkeeper and a defender before the ball found its way into the goal.

The teams went into halftime with Becker still leading 3-1.

The Hawks seemed headed for a victory with a comfortable lead, but with ten minutes left, Bay Path senior defender Angela Younger (Charlemont, Mass. / Mohawk Trail Regional) recovered a ball of a corner and caught the goalkeeper out of position for a shot, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Finally, with 2:28 left, Lebel went coast-to-coast and found Hanley for the hat trick as the rookie scored to put the game out of reach.

Becker junior goalkeeper Alexis Barry (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) finished with five saves in net. Bay Path senior goalkeeper Bethany Rogers (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth South) finished with six stops in net. The Hawks outshot the Wildcats, 13-8.

Becker is back on the field on Tuesday when they travel to Wheelock College for a 7:00 p.m. conference game. Bay Path's next contest will also be against Wheelock, that coming at home on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
