Hawks Claw Past Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, CONN.--Senior Travis Suber had 22 points, freshman Michael Massey added 20 points while sophomore Trey Jacobs had 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds as Becker won its fourth straight beating Coast Guard 78-68 to snap the Bears four-game winning streak in the final game of the semester for both teams.
Becker used an 8-0 run capped on back-to-back steals and baskets by freshman Markus Wright in the first half turning a 15-14 deficit into a 22-15 lead with 10:39 left, its largest lead of the half.
The Hawks (5-2) shot 56.3 percent in the first half (18-32) and led 42-41 at the break. Becker finished 34-66 from the field (51.5 percent) while making one of seven from 3-point range in the game.
Coast Guard shot 54.8 percent in the first half (17-31), but just 33.3 percent in the second half (9-27) to shot 44.8 percent for the game while connecting on nine of 25 from 3-point range.
Coast Guard outrebounded Becker 19-13 in the first 20 minutes, but Becker dominated the boards in the second half outrebounding the Bears 25-12 in the final 20 minutes.
Becker which led by as many as 13 in the second half, used an 8-2 spurt to turn a 59-55 lead into a 67-57 advantage with 6:05 left.
Senior Craig Johnson recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he led the Bears with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Eric Hudson added 14 points while sophomore Jevon James had eight points and eight rebounds in the loss.
