Suber and Jacobs Guide Hawks Past Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. - Aided by 44 points off of 31 Wentworth turnovers, the Becker College men's basketball team got 31 points from senior guard Travis Suber (Springfield, Mass.) and 22 points from sophomore forward Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, Md.) to pace the Hawks to a 103-81 win over Wentworth in a non-league contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.

The opening stages were back and forth, with neither team holding more than a four-point lead.  With 14:42 left in the half, Leopard senior guard Todd Doyle (Mystic, Conn.) drained a three pointer to trim the lead to one (15-14).  However, the Hawks went on an 8-3 run over the next 2:20 to take a 23-14 lead on a layup by Suber.

Becker would lead by as much as 10 (38-28) with 5:48 to play before an 8-1 run by Wentworth, capped off by a field goal from junior forward Shane West (Saco, Maine), cut the lead to three with 7:15 left.  Using an 11-2 run, with five points coming from senior guard Shawn Fuller (New Haven, Conn.) and four from freshman guard Michael Massey (New Haven, Conn.) the Hawks pushed their lead to 12 with 5:35 left.  Wentworth would get as close as eight with 2:45 left, but Becker used an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the half (16) on a basket by Jacobs and with Wentworth scoring the last five points of the half, would lead 51-40 at the break.

The Hawks opened their lead up to as much as 13 in the opening stages of the second half, but were outscored 14-6 over a span of 3:48 to see their lead shrink to five.  Becker would use a 23-6 run to take an 88-66 lead with 8:42 left and not look back.

Both teams shot well for the game, as the Hawks connected on 58.6 percent of their shots, including 63.3 percent in the second half, while Wentworth connected on 57.7 percent from the floor - 60.9 percent in the second half.

Suber's 31 points came on 11-for-19 shooting from the floor and he had seven assists, five rebounds, and five steals to go along with his game-high scoring performance.  Jacobs connected on 11 of 13 shots from the floor, while Massey had 16 points.

The Leopards were paced by Doyle, who tallied 28 points on 10-for-12 shooting, including hitting his first nine shots.  Junior Matt Abbott (Falmouth, Mass.) had 15 points, freshman guard Brendan Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) added 12 points, and West had an 11-point, 11-rebound night.

The win evens Becker's record to 2-2 and the Hawks will host Anna Maria Thursday night.  Wentworth, which gave up the most points since giving up 105 in a 10-5-74 loss at Colby-Sawyer on Feb. 3, 2004, has dropped five straight to stand at 1-5 and hosts Coast Guard, also on Thursday.
