Hawks Clinch NECC Top Seed
Leicester, Mass. - Becker College defeated Wheelock College 79-67 in a season finale New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action. With the win the Hawks clinch the number one seed in the upcoming NECC tournament and finish the regular season with a 17-8 (13-1 NECC) record. With the loss Wheelock finishes at 15-10 (8-6 NECC).
Becker never trailed in the game building leads of over twenty points in the first half and took a 48-24 lead into the locker room. The Hawks shot a blistering 57% from the field. Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass.) scored 18 points on a perfect 7 for 7 shooting, including 4 for 4 from behind the arc. Guard DeJohn Exum (New London, Conn.) was also in double figures in the first half scoring 16 points including 4 three pointers. Wheelock was led by senior Sherard Robbins who had 10 points and 4 rebounds in the half.
Wheelock battled back in the second half cutting the lead to 70-62 with just over four minutes remaining when Dan Main hit a three pointer after a Becker turnover. It was 70-64 after a Robbins layup at the 3:57 mark. DJ Exum hit a runner down the middle and Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD) hit a jumper at the top of the key to build Becker's lead back to ten 74-64. The Wildcats could only muster 3 points the rest of the way and the Hawks hung on for the 12 point win.
The Hawks were led by Exum who finished with a game high 27 points, Favors who finished with 22 and 7 assists and Trey Jacobs who had a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats' Main also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Becker outshot Wheelock 52% to 40% for the game and held a slim rebounding edged 39-38.
Becker receives a first round bye in the NECC tournament and will host the final four starting with the semi-final games on Friday February 26th, game times are 6pm and 8pm.
