Leicester, Mass. -Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass.) scored 17 points and Lee Brockett (Waterbury, Conn.) added 16 off the bench as Becker defeated Southern Vermont, 81-44 in NECC men's basketball action on Tuesday at the Leicester Gym. With the win, Becker is now 12-4 on the season with a conference-best 7-0 record. Southern Vermont slides to 2-15 with a 2-7 mark in the NECC.
The Hawks wasted little time jumping out to a 16-4 lead, with Jerome Cohen (Boston, Mass.) and Favors leading the way with six points each in the opening seven minutes. Becker dominated throughout the opening period, taking a 28 point lead off a layup by Brockett with two seconds left to go until halftime. Favors had 13 points and seven assists in the first half, with Cohen adding 12 points and eight boards. The Hawks scored 24 points off 15 Mountaineer turnovers, while pulling down 11 offensive rebounds; which led to another 15 points.
The hosts kept the pressure on in the second half, opening the period with a 16-6 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Brockett to put the Hawks up 38. The Mountaineers never had control as the Hawks led by as much as 41 with 8:24 left in the game after a layup from Donovin Ford-Hayes (Windsor Locks, Conn.). The Hawks' bench outscored their counterparts, 37-3, and the Hawks recorded a season-high 17 steals. The defense was stalwart, holding Southern Vermont to 34 percent shooting.
In addition to his game-high 17 points, Favors added eight rebounds and four steals. Brockett was instant offense off the bench, shooting over 50 percent from the floor with four rebounds. Cohen was a dominating presence inside, connecting on all seven of his shots while pulling down a team-high nine boards along with two steals. Ford-Hayes added 12 points and two steals. Chris Canady (Newark, N.J.) dished out a game-high six assists. Tyler Roberson (Irvington, N.J.) contributed six points, four boards and three steals.
Southern Vermont was led by Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Cory Christensen (Sharon, Conn.) added ten points with seven rebounds. Hunter Stratton (Bennington, Vt.) was tough on the defensive end with eight rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks. Travis Severs (Bennington, Vt.) added nine points and two steals.
The Hawks are back in action on Thursday, January 26th, when they host the Pride of Regis at 7p.m. The Mountaineers are also in action on Thursday as they travel to Newbury to face the Nighthawks.
