Hawks Tournament Run Ends With Loss To Scranton
Wayne, N.J. – Scranton (22-7) cruised to a 69-41 victory against Becker College (24-5) in the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament second round March 3 in Wayne, N.J. The Royals advance to NCAA Sectional semifinals Friday, March 9, and will face Middlebury in the Sweet Sixteen. The location and game time have yet to be announced.
Scranton had the advantage for much of the first half after opening up a double-digit lead at 18-8 7:22 into the game. Up by as many as 12 (26-14, 4:47), the Royals took an 11-point lead into the break, 29-18. Ross Danzig (Clarks Green Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) led all scorers in the first half with 12 points, converting three of six from beyond the arc. Becker shot just .286 (8-28) from the field in the opening period.
It was more of the same for Scranton after the break, opening the second half with an 11-0 burst (40-18, 17:09) and steadily pulling away from the fading Hawks. After a 40.7 (11-27) field-goal percentage during the opening period, Scranton was 14-for-24 (.583) during the final 20 minutes, and finished 9-for-20 (.450) overall from three-point range while Becker missed all 11 of its attempts from beyond the arc.
Danzig led all scorers with 22 points, adding eight rebounds. Junior Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) had 18 tallies and six boards, and senior Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) pulled down a game-best nine rebounds to go along with six tallies and three assists.
Freshman Jerome Cohen (Boston, Mass./Everett), senior Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn./Sheehan) and Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass./Bedford scored 10 points apiece for Becker. Favors' ten points moved him into second place all time at Becker (1.646), moving him past former teammate Trae Jacobs.
