LEICESTER, Mass. – The Becker College men's basketball team fell to the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State in overtime, 73-72, in a Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup inside the Leicester Gymnasium.

The teams traded points during the first five minutes of play. Becker held a slim lead in the tradeoff and held a five-point advantage when Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass.) drained a triple five minutes in. The Hawks saw their largest lead of seven with 9:14 remaining in the half succeeding a Dewayne Thomas (Lowell, Mass.) layup. Bridgewater State punched away at the Hawks' lead and an and-one from Rayshon Ward (Fayetteville, N.C.) sparked a 6-0 run to get within one, setting the score at 23-22 in favor of Becker. Bridgewater State saw a break and took back the lead with 5:44 remaining on a Nick Crocker (East Falmouth, Mass.) and-one. Becker tied the score again and held a slight 34-33 halftime lead. Ryan Carney (Easton, Mass.) led the Bears in the first half with 15 points, while Becker's offense was led by Ribeiro who had 10 points.
Bridgewater State's Brian Grant (Hyde Park, Mass.) was the first to score in the second, to put the Bears ahead by one. The score stayed close until the Hawks' Mateus Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ignited an 8-0 run just under five minutes in. However, the Bears responded with five points of their own to close the gap. The teams went back-and-forth but Becker led 62-57 with 18 seconds on the clock. Bridgewater's Carney came through with a layup with 13 seconds on the clock, but Becker pushed back the lead to five with a pair of Davis foul shots. Corey Green (Taunton, Mass.) was clutch for the Bears as he made a triple with seven seconds to go. On Becker's in-bounds pass, the Bears stole the ball and drew a foul, allotting two free throws from Carney, which sent the game into overtime tied at 64-64.
After trading points in the first 1:40 of the overtime period, Jonathan Mercado (Lynn, Mass.) made a triple which gave the Bears a slight advantage in back-and-forth play. A pair of free throws from Ward with 15 seconds on the clock put the Bears back up three. On the next possession, Becker went for a three and was unable to capitalize, however Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn.) got the offensive rebound and went up with the ball for two to bring Becker within one with five seconds to go. Bridgewater State held on and earned the 73-72 win – their first of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Carney finished with a game-high 29 points, a game-high six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
- Ward scored 14 points for the Bears and had five rebounds and four blocks on the occasion.
- Becker's Thomas recorded a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. He also marked four assists in the setback.
- Three other Hawks scored double-digit figures. Davis had 17 points, Ribeiro had a career-high 16, and Carr registered 13. Ribeiro was two rebounds short of a double-double.
- Each team shot 42% from the field and under 20% from beyond the arc.
- Becker held a 41-38 edge in rebounds.
The Hawks are home again on Tuesday (Dec. 4) for their conference opener against Lesley. Bridgewater State resumes competition on the same date, traveling to Wheaton for a 7 p.m. contest.
