Ice Breaker Tournament Finals Set
Marlboro, Mass - Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) scored six unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 win over host Becker College in the opening round of the men's ice hockey Ice Breaker Tournament sponsored by Atlas Distributing, Inc. at the New England Sports Center. In earlier action Nichols College defeated Suffolk University 4-1 to advance to the tournament finals.
Becker (0-1) got on the scoreboard first when freshman Kevin Coyne (Palos Heights, Illinois) converted a Marcus Oberg (Leksand, Sweden) for his first collegiate goal at the 12:46 mark of the first period. The Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after one period.
WIT (1-0) tied the game in the second period on a power play goal from Dave Lewandowski (Glenmore, Pennsylvania) with just under 11 minutes remaining in the period. Geric Brodt (Anchorage, Alaska) and Joey Sides (Sun Valley, Idaho) picked up assists on the goal. The teams started the third period tied 1-1.
Just 50 seconds into the third period Kyle Richardson (San Jose, California) scored the Leopards second power play goal of the game for game winner and a 2-1 lead. WIT put the game away scoring a pair of goals just nine seconds apart. Jeff Fedyk (Calgary, Alberta) scored a power play goal at 4:21 and before the fans were back in their seats Jeff Olitch (Calgary, Alberta) scored at 4:30 of the third period.
Jason Maltese (Shelby Township, Michigan) and Stephen Owens (Boston, Massachusetts) rounded out the scoring for Wentworth who had six different scorers.
The Becker College Ice Breakers Tournament will conclude Saturday, November 8th when the Hawks will face Suffolk in the consolation game at 4:45 pm and Nichols and Wentworth will battle for the 2008 title at 7:45 pm.
