IceHawks Drop Home Finale
Marlboro, Mass. - Senior captain Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL) scored a power play goal in his final regular season home game for Becker College but it wasn't enough as Suffolk University outlasted the Hawks, 3-2 in a crucial ECAC Northeast men's college hockey game at New England Sports Center tonight.
The Hawks drop to 10-11-1 (6-6 ECAC Northeast) and the Rams improve to 11-10-3 (7-4-2).
Tonight the Hawks celebrated PINK THE RINK night, to raise breast cancer awareness. Becker donned a commemorative pink sweater in memory of JoAnne M. Sullivan the late wife of associate coach Walter Sullivan. Each player made a donation for their own jersey and lucky fans could order one of the unique jerseys and purchase special pink and white t-shirts. Tonight they raised over $3,500. All proceeds raised will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity.
The Hawks jumped on the board first when sophomore Robert Johnson (Fenton, MI), working hard down the left side, fired a wrist shot past Suffolk goaltender, Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) at the 7:09 mark of the first period. Matt Morales (Mount Kisco, NY) and Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) picked up the helpers on the goal.
The lead lasted just over seven minutes. The Rams tied the game when Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.) slapper from the blue line found the back of the net past Hawks' net minder Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, NY). Zach Barron (St. Louis, MO) and Pat Welch (Dorchester, Mass.) had the assists.
The teams played a scoreless second period. Suffolk took the lead for good early in the third period when they broke out of their own zone on a 2 on 1 breakaway, Niles Moore (Columbus, OH) scored on a pass from Welch to make it a 2-1 game. The Rams made it 3-1 when Robbie Donahue scored unassisted on a wrap-around from behind the net at the 4:39 mark.
Ceglarek's goal for Becker came on a 5-on-3 power play at 14:36 of the third period but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
Both Rose and Rosenthal played well between the pipes, Rose finished with 26 saves while Rosenthal had 22.
