MARLBOROUGH, Mass.- Becker sophomore Devin Smith (Grafton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Ice Hawks to a 3-1 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in non-conference men's hockey action Thursday evening at the New England Sports Center.
The win lifts the Ice Hawks record to 5-10 while the Penmen slide to 11-6.
Becker got on the board with 1:21 remaining in the first period when Devin Smith gathered his own rebound in front, tipping it past SNHU goalie Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.
The Penmen tied the game on a power-play goal from Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) at the 15:36 mark of the second period, with assists from Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) and Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.).
Becker would retake the lead when the Penmen received two quick penalties, putting the Ice Hawks on the two-man advantage with 57 seconds remaining in the second period. Devin Smith would capitalize on the power-play with his second maker of the game on a feed from Connor Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.), putting the Ice Hawks in front 2-1.
Becker's Brandon Morgan (Rochester, N.Y.) added an insurance goal 54 seconds into the third period on the second half of the two-man advantage to make the final score 3-1.
Becker goalie Tyler Stepke (Mars, Pa.) made 28 saves to lift his record to 5-7 on the year. Kurt Gutting made 42 saves in his first collegiate start for the Penmen.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday, January 14th when they host Northeast-10 rival Assumption College at noon. Becker returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Thursday 19th with a home game against nationally ranked Endicott College at 7:40 p.m.
