Men's Ice Hockey reaches Stephen L. Hoar Tournament Final

WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's ice hockey team won 5-1 over visiting Bryn Athyn College in the first round of the Steve Hoar Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Fitchburg State defeated Stonehill College, 4-1, in the other game.

First, the Falcons of Fitchburg (5-2-1) handled the Skyhawks of Stonehill (2-3-1) in the tournament opener. Fitchburg sophomore forward Tyler Warila (Shirley, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins) scored two goals with an assist, while junior forward Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn. / Springfield Jr. Pics) and sophomore forward Kyle Hillick (Byfield, Mass. / Hawkesbury Hawks) each scored as well. Junior goalie Kirby Saari (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Philadelphia Revolution) finished with 20 saves for the Falcons. Stonehill sophomore forward Ryan Smith (Arlington, Mass. / Tilton School) scored for the Skyhawks while junior goalie Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I. / Boston Bandits (EHL Premier)) recorded 29 saves for Stonehill.

The Hawks of Becker (3-6-1) got on the board first over the Lions of Bryn Athyn (4-3) when freshman forward Aaron Deady (East Greenwich, R.I. / Cape Cod Islanders) scored his fourth goal of the year on a power play just 3:59 into the game, assisted by junior forward Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Pa. / Missoula Maulers). Eight minutes later and on another power play, senior forward James Wallace (Levittown, Pa. / Philadelphia Revolution) tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season, assisted by freshman defender Christian Leon (Natick, Mass. / Boston Advantage). Becker freshman forward Charles Costello (Philadelphia, Pa. / Cape Cod Islanders) found the net 2:39 into the second period on an even-strength shot, assisted by senior defender Nikolas` Nasby (Newberg, Ore. / Billings Bulls) and sophomore forward Trey McMillen (Grapevine, Texas / Rochester Ice Hawks), putting the Hawks back up 3-1. 13:40 into the third, Becker freshman forward John Tomkowiak (Lindenhurst, Ill. / Dells Ducks) scored his second goal of the year, and a minute later McMillen scored, assisted by senior forward John Dutney (Hudson, Mass. / The Winchendon School). Dutney leads the Hawks in points on the season with 12, with 11 of those coming from assists. Freshman goalie Ryan Clifford (Coventry, R.I. / Cape Cod Islanders) finished with 32 saves.

For Bryn Athyn, freshman defender Mike Perkett (Pittsfield, Mass. / Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) had the Lions' sole goal, while freshman goalie McKenzie Chalmers (Calgary, Alberta / Waywayseecappo Wolverines (MJHL)) finished with 30 saves.

All four teams will be back on the ice on Sunday for the Championship and Consolation games. Stonehill will play Bryn Athyn in the consolation game at 4:00 p.m. while Fitchburg State faces Becker at 7:00 p.m. in the championship final.
