WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's ice hockey team lost 9-1 to visiting University of New England on Thursday night at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.
The Nor'easters of New England (15-3-2, 8-3-2 CCC), entering the week as the ninth ranked team in the country, got on the board first 7:30 into the opening period when sophomore forward Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich. / Minnesota Wilderness (NAHL)) scored on the power play, assisted by junior forward Brady Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine / Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL)) and freshman forward Jeff Eppright (Barrington, N.J. / Philadelphia Jr. Flyers (USPHL)). UNE made it 2-0 just 3:16 into the second when freshman defenseman Chris Jones (Seattle, Wash. / Wenatchee Wild (BCHL)) found the back of the net, assisted by Fleurent and Bloom. Four and a half minutes later, Fleurent found Bloom again for the sophomore's second goal of the game.
The Hawks of Becker (4-14-1, 2-11-0 CCC) finally answered with 3:32 to go in the second when freshman defenseman Quinn Robelle (Lutz, Fla. / New York Applecore) scored his first career goal, assisted by senior forward John Dutney (Hudson, Mass. / The Winchendon School).
The second period finally came to a close, but not before Fleurent scored off a power play with 2:17 to go, assisted by freshman forward Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo. / Syracuse Stars (USPHL)).
In the third period, Fleurent scored his second goal of the game 5:02 in, assisted by Bloom and junior defenseman Tucker Ross (Ashburn, Va. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL)) as UNE went ahead 5-1 on a short-handed goal. Four minutes later, Seltenreich scored, assisted by Fleurent and Bloom.
11:58 into the third, the Nor'Easters made it 7-1 when sophomore forward Adam Canepa (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Corpus Christi IceRays (NAHL)) scored unassisted. It was the first UNE goal of the night that Fleurent, who finished with two goals and four assists, had no part in. One minute later, Ross made it 8-1, assisted by senior forward Christian Rossetti (Marblehead, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL)) and freshman forward Derek Mecrones (Medford, Mass. / Springfield Jr. Pics (USPHL)). With 1:13 to go in the game and on a power play, Jones scored his second goal of the game, freshman forward Brendan Donohue (New Hope, Pa. / Connecticut Jr. Rangers (USPHL)) and sophomore forward Liam Neuman (Newmarket, Ontario / Aurora Tigers (OJHL)) for the final score.
Becker freshman goalie Richard D'Ortenzio (Holliston, Mass. / Portland Jr. Pirates) finished with 37 saves in 52:52 in net. UNE sophomore goalie Tate Sproxton (Surrey, British Columbia / Grand Prairie Storm (AJHL)) had 24 saves going the distance. The Nor'easters outshot the Hawks, 52-25.
Becker and UNE will have a quick turnaround as they'll play each other again on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. game.
