Men's Lacrosse Falls To Mustangs In GNAC Semifinals
NEWTON, Mass.- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team defeated the Hawks of Becker College by a final score of 13-3 on Thursday afternoon on Alumni Field. With the win, Mount Ida improves to (11-7) overall, while advancing to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship game on Saturday afternoon. The loss ends Becker's season with a final record of (6-11).
Senior Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted tally at the 8:29 mark of the first quarter after several minutes of scoreless play by both teams. After taking the early lead, Michael Markvevich (Westminster, MA/Oakmont) put the hosts up two on an assist from Chaz Strom (North Grafton, MA/Blackstone Valley Tech). Three minutes later Markevich added his second goal of the game off the pass from Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, RI/St. Andrew's School). The remaining 5:14 of the opening stanza went back and forth with no goals scored and at the completion of the quarter; Mount Ida would lead 3-0.
The Mustangs started off red hot in the second quarter as Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) scored two straight goals, one unassisted and one off the stick of Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) while extending the Mustang lead to 5-0. JT Hoyt (Westfield, MA/Westfield) snared a pass from Trocchi just outside the crease and Hoyt put it past the Becker keeper for the commanding 6-0 lead. Markevich would strike again for his third goal of the opening half while increasing the Mount Ida lead to 7-0 at the break.
David Deschenes (Gales Ferry, CT) would get Becker on the board just seconds into the second half off a pass from teammate Joe Ignagni (Kingston, MA) cutting into the Mustang lead at 7-1. Senior attack Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's Shrewsbury) and Zach Davis (Old Lyme, CT/Xavier) tallied two goals to extend the lead into the fourth quarter at 9-1.
Markevich would continue his scoring spree to start the fourth scoring three more goals in first five minutes on assist from Trocchi and Will Krach (Agawam, MA/Agawam). With the 12-1 advantage, Trocchi would add his final score of the game at the 7:01 mark before Deschenes scored man-up and Alex Rossman (Newington, CT) added his only goal of the game. The Becker scores would prove not enough as Mount Ida would advance to the GNAC title game by a final score of 13-3.
Mount Ida was led offensively by Markevich who tallied a game high six goals for the Mustangs while Trocchi added a hat trick while also recording three assists. Hoyt, Jake and Zach Davis, and Yacuzzi would add solo goals while Rosen, Strom, Pichel, and Krach all added assists.
Craig Bray (New Canaan, CT/Vermont Academy) was outstanding in goal for the Mustangs, playing the first 55:31 of the contest while making 11 saves on 13 shots. Bray's tremendous play paved the way for Anthony Genualdo (Peabody, MA/Mystic Valley) to relieve Bray in the final 4:29 of the contest while making one save on two shots.
The Mustangs will once again return to the GNAC Championship game for the third year in a row and will face off against the Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Vermont with game time slated for 1:00 PM.
