NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman defender Braeden Krakosky (Sachse, Texas) became the fourth Mount Ida player in the last two games to score his first collegiate goal, and it held up as the eventual game-winner in a 3-0 win over visiting Becker College in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mount Ida (3-2) outshot their opponents 32-5, and has now had an 86-7 advantage in shots over the last two games, both shutout victories.
Krakosky's strike came at the 33:31 mark of the first half, taking a nifty through ball from sophomore Nolan Reimondo (Portland, Conn.) and blasting the ball right past the shoulder of Becker freshman goalie Sam Majewski (Warren, Mass.).
Majewski stopped 13 shots and also had the benefit of a team save, but Mount Ida found their way past him twice in the second half to extend their lead.
Junior Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) took advantage of a mistake by Majewski for his team-high fourth goal of the year. Brenes took a ball down out of the air off the foot of Majewski and caught the keeper far out of the net to double Mount Ida's lead in the 74th minute.
Just over two minutes later, freshman Ethan Sweet (Claremont, N.H.) scored for the second time in as many games, scoring off of a loose ball. Sweet scored his first career goal on Monday in Mount Ida's 5-0 win over Wheelock.
Majewski had to make nine saves in the first half, including eight in the first twenty minutes of play as the Mustangs came out of the gate firing with 19 shots in the opening forty-five minutes.
On the other side, Mustang senior keeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) stopped one shot and earned his first complete game shutout of the season.
This was the final tune-up for the Mustangs before they enter Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, which they will do on Saturday at 1:00 pm when they visit Suffolk in Boston.
Becker is on the road again on Sunday, heading to Vermont for a 12:00 pm game at Johnson State.
