Koch’s golden goal lifts Men's Soccer over Lions

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's soccer team prevailed in a thrilling 3-2 victory in overtime over visiting Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester.

The first half saw a good deal of action, with both physical play and scoring attempts abounding. It was nevertheless scoreless as both teams went into halftime knotted at 0-0.

In the 46th minute, Eastern Nazarene broke the deadlock, as junior midfielder Joao Costa (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) found junior midfielder Connor Hudson-Bryant (Weymouth, Mass. / Weymouth) for his first goal of the season as the Lions went ahead 1-0.

Seven minutes later, Becker scored the equalizer when freshman midfielder Lemar Baptista (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) passed to senior midfielder Cody Lavallee (Burrillville, R.I. / Burrillville) as the senior finished for his first goal of the season, tying it at 1-1 and shifting momentum to the Hawks.

Becker carried that momentum into the 60th minute, Baptista took it himself, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season and putting the Hawks up 2-1, assisted by junior defender Ryan Jacksin (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy).

The Hawks appeared headed for victory, but in the 84th minute, Eastern Nazarene sophomore defender Matt Knowlton (Beverly, Mass. / Covenant Christian Acad.) scored a game-tying shot, sending the game into overtime tied 2-2.

In the first overtime, Becker freshman forward Colby Koch (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip Regional) exploded towards the goal in the 95th minute, taking a pass from Baptista and finishing to give the Hawks the 3-2 victory.

Becker freshman goalkeeper Sam Majewski (Warren, Mass. / Quaboag Regional Middle) continued his strong rookie campaign, tallying seven saves in net. Eastern Nazarene sophomore goalkeeper Victor Mendoza (Cathedral, Calif. / Palm Springs) finished with 11 stops. The Hawks held a slight edge in shots over the Lions, 20-19.

Becker is back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Southern Vermont College for an NECC matchup beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Nazarene travels to Curry College on Friday night for a 6:30 p.m. game.
