Men's Tennis Soars Past Wildcats, 8-1
Boston, Mass. – Junior Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) won a combined two matches at number one doubles and second singles to lead the Becker College men's tennis team to an 8-1 victory over host Wheelock College this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference dual match at the Winsor Courts in Boston, MA. The Hawks improve to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 0-5 and 0-4.
The doubles duo of Parkhouse and senior Tim Howard (Paxton, MA) did not drop a game at number one doubles in an 8-0 win in pro-set format over the Wheelock tandem of senior Bobby Venning (Greenfield, NH) and sophomore Claire O'Donoghue (East Haven, CT). Parkhouse earned a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Wildcats' freshman Charles Armstrong-Hicks (Windsor, CT) at second singles as well.
Becker junior David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) defeated O'Donoghue at number four singles, 6-3, 6-4, while sophomore Brian Piquette (Feeding Hills, MA) won at third singles for the Hawks with a 6-2, 6-2 effort over Wheelock freshman Mile Carey-Snow (Brunswick, ME). Piquette teamed with senior Jake Gilbert (Huntington Beach, CA), earlier in the night, to beat Armstrong-Hicks and Carey-Snow at number two doubles, 8-2. Junior Devon Dubuque (Cranston, RI) took fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2, over freshman the Wildcats' Scott Sobel (Silver Spring, MD and junior Jason Alera (Shrewsbury, MA) won at sixth singles for the Hawks by a count of 7-5, 6-4 over Wheelock senior Irene Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain). The Becker duo of Graham and Alera played down to the wire at number three doubles vs. Sobel and senior Jeff Silveria (Wilmington, MA) and edged the tandem, 9-8, winning the tie-breaker, 7-2.
The Wildcats earned their lone point of the evening when Venning took down Howard at first singles. The pair split the first two sets with Venning taking the first, 6-2, before Howard came away with a 6-3 second set. Venning put the match away with a decisive 10-3 third set.
Wheelock will be in action again when it hosts its third match in as many nights tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the Winsor Courts vs. NECC foe Newbury College, while the Hawks travel to Cambridge, MA tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. match with Lesley University.
