Softball Falls In Final Home Game
Leicester, Mass- Worcester State took both ends of their softball doubleheader with Becker College by the final scores of 12-1 and 8-6.
Game one was dominated from the start by the Worcester State. The Lancers got on the board in the 1st inning when Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, Mass) scored on a wild pitch. Becker committed 3 errors in the top of the 3rd inning, leading to 4 Worcester State runs. The Lancers blew the game wide open in the top of the 4th with 7 runs. Karen Feeley (West Springfield, Mass) got the scoring started with a RBI single to center field, making the score 6-0. Michaella Mahoney then worked a bases loaded walk, putting the Lancers up 7-0. Ashley Nye (Marion, Mass) made the score 8-0 with a singled to right. After a wild pitch allowed another Lancer to score, Ashley Loomer (Pepperell, Mass) singled to right field, making the score 10-0. The Lancers scored two more runs on more Hawks mishaps in the field.
Becker scored their lone run in the bottom of the 5th on a Lindsay Hanna (Portland, ME) RBI single.
Marcy Rumrill (Orange, Mass) allowed 0 earned runs over 5 innings of work, to earn the win for the Lancers. Ashley Nye carried Worcester State with 2 hits, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
Jessica Lewis (Bellingham, Mass) allowed 7 earned runs over 4 innings of work, to take the loss for the Hawks.
In game two, the Hawks rallied from a 4-0 deficit to force the game into extra innings. The Lancers scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st on 5 Becker errors. The Hawks started chipping away at the Lancer lead in the bottom of the 1st. With one on and two outs, Amanda Fogaren (Tewksbury, Mass) drove a homerun to deep centerfield, cutting the Lancer lead in half.
The Hawks continued to chip away at the Lancer lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After Kristin Cammuso (Rutland, Mass) doubled to center field, the Lancer 3rd baseman committed a throwing error allowing Cammuso to score from 2nd.
The Lancers added to their 4-3 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Ashley Nye led off the inning with a double down the left field line. After another Becker error, Katherine Kelly (Burlington, Mass) ripped a single past the dive of the short stop, scoring Nye from 3rd.
With the Hawks trailing 5-3, Becker took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning. With the bases loaded and two outs Rachel Weidele (Woodbridge, NJ) scored on a wild pitch, putting Becker within one. Amanda Fogaren reached on an error, allowing Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass) to score the tying run. Lindsay Hanna gave the Hawks their first lead of the game with a single to center field.
The Lancers tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Michaella Mahoney. The Lancers tried to wave home the go ahead run, but Leann Norrman (Auburn, Mass) gunned the runner down at the plate, preserving the 6-6 tie.
The two teams were forced into extra innings. The Lancers sealed the win in the top of the 8th on an Ashley Loomer RBI single. Katherine Kelly added an RBI double, as Worcester State notched the 8-6 win.
Cathy Costopoulos (Tyngsboro, Mass) pitched 4.1 innings of hitless relief, to earn the win for the Lancers. With the sweep, Worcester State improved to 10-19-1.
Despite allowing only 3 earned runs, Kristin Cummuso took the loss for the Hawks. Becker fell to 2-22 on the season.
