Falcons Sweep Softball

Leicester, Mass. --The Becker Softball team dropped two games to visiting Fitchburg State on Saturday at Russell Field, losing the first game 3-2 before coming up short with a 3-1 result in game two. The visiting Falcons are now 3-11 on the year while the Hawks fall to 1-9.

The Falcons struck first in the opener, with Emily Pomer (Groveland, Mass.) grounding out in the top of the second to score Victoria Brinkley (Durham, Conn.) from third. The Hawks responded in the bottom of the third, with Lauren Lavalle (Millbury, Mass.) crushing an RBI triple to center field, driving in Megan Bolduc (Dover, N.H.). Two batters later, Talan Barron (Methuen, Mass.) singled to left and Lavalle came home to put Becker up 2-0. But in the top of the fourth, Brinkley homered over the left field fence to tie the game for Fitchburg State, and the visiting Falcons scored the go-ahead run when Amy Murphy (Dummerston, Vt.) scored from second on a single to left field by Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, N.J.). The 3-2 lead proved decisive in the Falcons' favor. Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass.) struck out seven Hawks in seven innings for Fitchburg State, picking up the win. Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) gave up just three runs with two strikeouts for Becker.

In game two, Fitchburg State again scored first, this time off an RBI double to left field by

Emily Pomer (Groveland, Mass.) in the top of the third to score Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass.). The Falcons took a two run lead in the top of the fourth when Lauren Weitz (Billerica, Mass.) took advantage of a Becker fielding error to score from third. The Hawks got on the board in the board in the bottom of the fifth when Jessica Brochu (Hardwick, Vt.) took advantage of a botched pickoff  throw to score from third. In the top of the seventh, Forgues smashed an RBI double to center field, scoring Whitelaw. Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass.) finished with five strikeout for Fitchburg State, holding Becker without an earned run in seven innings. Megan Cordon (Watertown, Conn.) had two strikeouts for the Hawks.

Becker will look to bounce back on Sunday when they host the Eagles of Green Mountain in a double-header beginning at 1:00pm. Fitchburg State travels to Keene State on Thursday for a double-header.
