CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Becker College softball team took two tough losses on Tuesday morning in Clermont, Florida, losing a heart-breaker against Lasell College, 9-8, before falling 8-5 to Ohio Wesleyan University.
First against the Lasers of Lasell, the Hawks of Becker were down 2-1 in the top of the third when senior first baseman Ashley Ciepiela (Adams, Mass. / Hoosac Valley) came to the plate with the bases loaded and launched a double to left center, clearing the bases and putting the Hawks up by three. Later in the top of the fifth with the game tied 4-4, freshman shortstop Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) drove in junior outfielder Jennifer Boxell (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) on an RBI single. One inning later, Becker went up 8-6 when junior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) scored on a throwing error, sophomore outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut), the hottest bat in the lineup, doubled in sophomore catcher Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman), then later scored from third herself on a double-steal. In the bottom of the seventh, Becker was one strike away from putting the game away when the Lasers rallied, scoring three unearned runs in the win.
Facing Ohio Wesleyan, Lee recorded three hits while Murphy had two more, scoring two runs. In the bottom of the fifth inning, junior infielder Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) scored off a double-steal and Ciepela had an RBI hit to drive in Murphy to tie the game at 5-5. That was as close as the Hawks would get, however, as the Bishops made the big plays down the stretch.
For the day, Ciepela when three-for-five with two walks and four RBI. Lee hit .500 and scored three runs while Murphy hit .500 with four runs.
The Hawks of Becker are back on the field on Thursday when they play Arcadia at 8:00 a.m.
