LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team split their regular season finale double-header on Saturday to visiting Mitchell College at Russell Field in Leicester, winning 3-0 in game one before falling just short in the nightcap, 4-3.
The Hawks of Becker finish their regular season at 19-15 with a 12-4 record against New England Collegiate Conference opponents, and they'll await word of their fate in the upcoming NECC Championship Tournament. The Mariners of Mitchell are now 13-19 with an 8-6 record against conference foes.
In the first game, Becker senior Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight Mariners. Lee also delivered with her bat as, in the bottom of the first inning, the senior launched a three-run shot far over the left field fence, her seventh home run of the season and the 100th hit of her career. Junior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) and freshman shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) both scored on that dinger, and that would prove to be all the offense the hosts would need. Senior centerfielder Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) also had a hit for the Hawks. Mitchell freshman pitcher Shyla Phillips-Krick (Griswold, Conn. / Griswold) allowed just two hits in six innings for the Mariners. Senior second baseman Samantha DelConte (Enfield, Conn. / Enrico Fermi) went throw for three at the plate.
In the second game, the Hawks went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Carkhuff had an RBI groundout to score Ellis from third. In the top of the third, Mitchell tied the game on an RBI double from senior Italia Krick (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) followed by an RBI single from junior pitcher Taylor Duchesneau (Killingly, Conn./Killingly) to put the Mariners up 2-1. Becker tied it in the bottom of the third, as junior catcher Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) singled through the left side to score senior Jennifer Boxell (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough). In the top of the fourth, a costly Becker error allowed freshmen Laurissa Amaker (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) and Stephanie Adams (White Plains, Md. / McDonough) to score, putting the visitors up 4-2. In the bottom of the seventh and down to their last three outs, Becker senior Shannon Lundy (Barnstable, Mass. / Barnstable) came in to pinch-hit and lead off with a single. Boxell reached on an error, putting runners on second and third with no outs. After Ellis flied out to shallow left, Carkhuff singled through the left side, scoring Lundy from third and, after a Carkhuff steal, putting runners at second and third with one out with the score 4-3. But Klemanchuck struck out swinging and junior Brianna Herforth (Peru, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) flied out to left to end the game.
Prior to the game, Becker recognized their six departing seniors as part of Senior Day. Lee, Carkhuff, Klemanchuck, Boxell, Herforth and Lundy were recognized by coaches, teammates and family members for their years of contributions not on to the softball program but to the Becker community as a whole. Although their time at Becker may be coming to an end, they will forever be part of the Hawks' family.
