Softball sweeps Southern Vermont

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept visiting Southern Vermont College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) double-header on Sunday at Russell Field in Leicester. The Hawks won the first game, 15-1, in five innings before pulling away in game two, 8-0, in six innings.

Since returning from Florida, the Hawks have gone 11-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Becker freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) posted a career-high eight strikeouts over five innings for the Hawks, allowing no earned runs. Sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) crushed a bases-loaded grand slam in the bottom of the fourth for her first home run of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Becker senior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) had her best start of the season, allowing just three hits and no runs in six innings.

TOP HAWKS
• Ellis finished the day with two hits and five runs batted in, four of them coming off her home run.
• Veillette tallied four hits and a walk on the day from the plate, driving in one run.
• Freshman outfielder Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) went three-for-four at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
• Senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) went three-for-six with a home run, three runs batted in and three runs scored.
• Junior third baseman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) went two-of-two with a run scored.
• Belenchia went three-for-six with four RBI, including a game-ending home run at the end of game two.
• Sophomore second baseman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) went three-for-six with a triple – the first triple of the season for the Hawks – with three RBI and two runs scored.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the field on Wednesday when they play at Suffolk University in a 4:00 p.m. double-header.
