Lady Hawks Fall To AMCATS 71-48

PAXTON, Mass. - Freshman Tonique Adkins (New Haven, Conn.) came off the bench to collect a game-high 21 points and six steals, leading the Anna Maria College women's basketball team to their sixth-straight win in a 71-48 victory over Becker College at The Fuller Activities Center on Thursday night. The win improves the AMCATS' record to 6-2 overall, while the Hawks remain winless at 0-6.

Anna Maria hit their first four shots from the floor to grab an early 8-2 advantage in the game's first two minutes. However, the Hawks immediately answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by senior Courtney Fiske (Westfield, Mass.), to give Becker a 9-8 lead.

The AMCATS then took control, as Adkins exploded to score 16 straight points and lead AMC on a 16-2 run.

AMC kept the pressure on, scoring 12 of the half's final 18 points to go into the locker room with a 36-20 advantage.

The AMCATS out-rebounded the Hawks 26-14, leading to an 18-4 edge in points in the paint, and an 11-2 advantage in second chance points. AMC also ran the floor well during the opening period, scoring 10 fast break points.

Anna Maria was able to ride their momentum into the second half, scoring the opening eight points of the period to open up a commanding 24-point lead.

The Hawks fought back with a 12-2 run of their own, as junior Heidi Miller (Sanbornton, N.H.) started to get things going down low.

However, the AMCATS were able to match Becker shot-for-shot down the stretch, capturing their sixth-straight win by the score of 71-48.

AMC was led by a strong all-around performance from freshman Tonique Adkins, who scored 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds and six steals in just 22 minutes of action. Sophomore Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Alison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass.) also finished in double digits with 10 and 11 points, respectively, while senior Maggie Sielawa (Webster, Mass.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Senior Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass.) paced the Hawks with a team-best 10 points and nine rebounds, while Heidi Miller chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds in the loss.
