North Dartmouth, Mass-The Becker College women's basketball team was outscored by UMass Dartmouth in the second half, 45-23 as the Corsairs went on to defeat the Hawks, 83-50, in a non-conference game at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening.
Leading at halftime, 38-28, the Corsairs used a 13-6 run to take a 51-34 lead. Junior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA/ Canton HS) started the run with a three-point play, freshman guard Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) added a pair of free throws and a layup, freshman guard Nicole Grassi (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North HS) contributed a pair of baskets, and senior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Bridgewater State) capped the run with a three-pointer. UMass Dartmouth steadily expanded their lead for the remainder of the half, and their 31-point margin at the end of the game was their largest margin.
Moriarty led UMass Dartmouth with 20 points, adding 12 rebounds for a double double. Garrity added 13, freshman guard Melissa Daigle (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) contributed 11 points, and Houtman had 10. Daigle also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double double. Sophomore forward Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) and senior guard Kristina Desnoyers (Adams, Mass.) scored 15 points each to lead the Hawks.
Grassi grabbed eight rebounds for UMD, and Desnoyers had seven for Becker as the Corsairs outrebounded the Hawks, 57-37. The Corsairs connected on 44.4 per cent of their shots from the field, whole holding Becker to 27 per cent.
The Corsairs improved to 4-2 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 0-5 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday in the Little East Conference opener for both teams. Becker will visit Regis next Tuesday, December 6th.
