Leicester, Mass.- The Becker College women's basketball team lost their New England Collegiate Conference home opener 69-61 this afternoon at the Leicester Gymnasium.
At the 17:14 mark of the first half Newbury's Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) pulled down her 819th career rebound, setting a new Nighthawk record.
The two teams went back and forth in a seesaw battle in the first half. Newbury took the largest lead of the first half with 5:15 remaining when Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) put back her own missed shot, making the score 25-19. The Hawks came soaring back with a 12-2 run to finish the half, taking a 33-29 lead into the break.
Becker sophomore Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) and Newbury sophomore Katie Haney carried their respective teams with ten points each in the first half.
With Becker holding a six point lead early in the second half, the Nighthawks went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Katie Haney layup, putting Newbury in front 36-35. After the two teams exchanged the lead six times in the first ten minutes of the half, Newbury got back to back three pointers by Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C.) and Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) giving the Nighthawks a 52-47 advantage. Newbury used a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach, giving the Nighthawks the 69-61 win.
The Nighthawks had four players in double figures. Catherine O'Connell led the Nighthawks with 13 points and a game high 18 rebounds, earning the double-double. Seniors Kendra Bannister and Morganna Machado chipped in with 13 points each. Bannister also had 14 rebounds to earn the double-double. Katie Haney finished the afternoon with 12 points. The win lifts the Nighthawks to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the NECC.
