The Newbury College women's basketball team completed the season sweep over Becker College with a 76-44 victory Thursday evening. For the first time in her collegiate career sophomore forward Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) registered back-to-back double-doubles, tallying 16 points while ripping down 16 rebounds en route to the Nighthawks fifth conference victory of the season.
On their second possession of the game, Hawks sophomore guard Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, Mass.) turned a steal from classmate Haley Ooms (Valatie, N.Y.) into two points with easy lay-up for the first points of the game 48 seconds in. But the Nighthawks offense quickly caught fire.
Haney atoned for her turnover that led to Joubert's bucket and knocked down a mid-range jumper to knot up the score at two and from there it was all Nighthawks. Senior guard Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C.) found an open Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) open at the perimeter to kick-off a lopsided 20-6 run.
Late in the first half, junior center Catherine O'Connell registered her 10th double-double of the season, completing a three-point play to gave the Nighthawks their largest lead of the half, 36-14. O'Connell led Newbury into halftime with a commanding 41-20 lead after finishing the half with 11 points and 10 boards.
When the teams emerged from the locker room at the start of the second half, the Nighthawk offense was kindling. Led by O'Connell's game-high 17 points and 14 boards, five players registered double figures. One of them was first year guard Nephie Marsh (Brockton, Mass.) who also racked up 14 points in addition to dishing out seven assists.
After tallying seven points and nine rebounds in the first half, Haney reversed those two numbers in the second while senior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) came alive in the second. The Attleboro native knocked down two long range jumpers for six of her eight second period points to finish with 12 on the evening.
Despite the loss, sophomore forward Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) and classmate Jacqueline Chila (Monroe, Conn.) each notched 10 points for the Hawks while ripping down six and five rebounds, respectively.
Newbury remains undefeated improving to 5-0 in the conference and 7-5 overall while Becker falls to 1-10 and 1-4 in the NECC.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 14th, when they host NECC opponent Daniel Webster College at 3 p.m.
