Women's Basketball Season Ends After 69-50 Loss At Daniel Webster
Nashua, N.H. – Senior Sarah Paternostro (Glastonbury, Conn.) flirted with a triple double, eventually settling for a team-high 20 points to go along with nine assists, seven rebounds and added two steals for good measure and fourth-seeded Daniel Webster rebounded from a poor shooting performance early to push past fifth-seeded Becker College, 69-50 in the quarterfinals of the NECC championship tournament Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Fellow Eagle senior Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) added 16 points and seven rebounds, Kirsten Murphy (Woodstock, Vt.) chipped in with 10 points and senior Emily Travis (Somerset, Mass.) pulled down a career high 11 rebounds and broke the all-time single game record for blocks in a game with six with three in each half.
Sophomore Jennifer Fredericks (Beacon Falls, Conn.) pulled in a career-high 10 rebounds for DWC, while senior Ali Chojnacki (Erie, Penn.) added six points and four boards.
The NECC defending tournament champion Eagles (18-8) advanced to the semifinal round for the fourth straight season to face top seed, final four host and regular season champion Regis College on Friday night beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The second semifinal features second seeded Elms College against third-seeded Newbury at 8:00 p.m. Both the Blazers and Nighthawks also posted quarterfinal victories Tuesday night. Semifinal winners advance to Saturday's championship game slated for 2:00 p.m.
Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) led the Hawks (8-18) with a game high double double of 21 points and 13 rebounds including 13 points and nine boards in the first half that kept the Hawks within striking distance.
Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, Mass.) added 16 points and six boards for Becker while Haley Ooms (Valatia, N.Y.) chipped in with eight rebounds and a team-best six assists.
DWC suffered badly from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, connecting on just 11-percent and didn't break the 10-point mark until the 13:20 mark of the half.
It was, in fact, a tale of two halves as Becker posted an 18-12 advantage in the paint in the opening frame and pulled down 12 offensive boards allowing them to build as much as a six-point lead with 6:40 to go in the period.
Two Paternostro jumpers pulled DWC back within two and the Eagles pulled even at 19 on a Murphy layup. After the teams traded baskets, a Kacie Lang (Raymond, N.H.) jumper) gave DWC its first lead in more than 12 minutes and a Paternostro layup and two at the line capped a 7-0 run as the Eagles led 28-25 at the break.
DWC, which recovered to finish 26-percent from the floor in the first, came out firing in the second and would finish 47-percent from the field. A Fredericks three and a Paternostro layup pushed the lead to eight (33-25) and after a Joubert layup, Gervais buried one from downtown, Murphy and Lang followed with layups and a 13-4 run pushed the advantage to 12 (41-29) with 14:44 to go.
DWC also woke up inside, outscoring the Hawks 28-16 around the rim in the second and won the glass 30-17. The Eagles also finished with 26 points off 19 Hawk turnovers on the night while Becker scored 10 points on 14 Eagle giveaways.
A Joubert layup and later one at the line gave Becker life at 43-32 with 13:26 to go, but a Travis layup, an Allyssa Marson (Augusta, Maine) three and another inside move from the freshman pushed the lead to 18 (52-34) with 10:52 left and DWC would pull away with an 11-1 run ending with a Gervais jumper for a 59-35 game with 8:05 left. Becker would pull no closer than 19 the rest of the way.
