Harrison’s 23 points helps Women's Basketball hold off Mountaineers

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's basketball team won 60-57 over visiting Southern Vermont College on Monday evening at the Leicester Gymnasium.

Freshman guard Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough) led the Hawks of Becker (11-9, 11-3 NECC) with 23 points, shooting 56 percent from the floor including four three-pointers. Harrison also pulled down six rebounds and tallied two steals. Sophomore guard Ciara McKissick (Charlton, Mass. / Shepherd Hill Regional) finished with 13 points and five boards, while sophomore guard Katey Anderson (Beachwood, N.J. / Toms River) buried two three-pointers. Sophomore forward Adrianna Dowdy (East Haven, Conn. / Hill Regional Career) recorded a game-high eight rebounds.

The Mountaineers of Southern Vermont (1-18, 1-13 NECC) were led by junior forward Chloe Longe (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg Falls HS) with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Amber Dow (Panton, Vt./Vergennes Union HS) scored 13 points on just six shots while sophomore guard Amber Lesure (Cheshire, Mass./Hoosac Valley HS) with nine points and five rebounds.

Harrison scored 12 of Becker's 16 first quarter points, as Southern Vermont used good passing and shooting to open up a ten-point lead. The Hawks slowly chipped away at the Mountaineers lead in the second quarter, going into halftime trailing 33-28.

In the third quarter, Becker again turned to Harrison, as the rookie scored game-tying baskets on three straight possessions, including a three-pointer to knot it at 38-38 with 7:23 left. The Hawks took their first lead of the game on a jumper from McKissick two minutes later, and Becker entered the final stanza up 47-43.

In the fourth, the two teams traded the lead back and forth, both looking for the advantage. Becker appeared to have it won when they took a five-point lead on a free throw from freshman forward Micaela Rice (Charlton, Mass. / Shepherd Hill Regional) with 46 seconds left. But Longe made a layup with two seconds left to pull the Mountaineers to within two. Harrison finally sealed the win, making one of two free throws at the line, and Southern Vermont, who was out of timeouts, was unable to get a clean shot off before the buzzer.

The Hawks of Becker are back on the court on Wednesday when they travel to Regis College for a 6:00 p.m. matchup. The Mountaineers of Southern Vermont travel to Daniel Webster College on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m.
