LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's basketball team lost 58-54 to visiting Mitchell College on Thursday evening in a clash of New England Collegiate Conference rivals at the Leicester Gymnasium.
The Hawks of Becker (8-7, 4-3 NECC) were led by sophomore guard Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough), with 28 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Junior forward Adrianna Dowdy (East Haven, Conn. / Hill Regional Career) posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds while shooting five-of-nine from the floor. Sophomore forward Sarah Ware (Oakham, Mass. / Quabbin Regional) pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds while dishing out a career-best five assists. Freshman guard Allie Ablondi (Thompson, Conn. / Tourtellotte Memorial) came off the bench to score eight points in just 11 minutes, shooting fifty percent from the floor.
The Mariners of Mitchell (7-9, 6-2 NECC) were led by freshman forward Dejia Santana (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) who scored 16 points with four rebounds off the bench in just 14 minutes. Sophomore guard Allegra Jones (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) scored 15 points with four rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Ashleigh Beauford (Newington, Conn./Newington) posted 10 points with eight boards, while junior forward Francesca Pinard (Arlington, Mass./Matignon) finished with a team-high nine rebounds with six points. The Mariners held a 21-8 edge in bench scoring.
After Mitchell opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 22-14 lead, Becker closed out the first half with a 16-2 rally, a stretch that included eight points from Ablondi. The Hawks led at halftime, 30-24.
In the third, Becker continued to dominate, scoring seven straight points to lead by as much as 13, a run capped off with a jumper from Ware with 4:51 to go in the quarter. The Hawks led 42-38 going into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Becker went cold from the floor as Mitchell scored the first eight points to surge into the lead, taking a four-point lead when Beauford hit a three with 7:06 to go as the Mariners went up 46-42. Later in the fourth with the Hawks trailing by three with 58 seconds to go, the hosts turned to their leading scorer, Cassidy Harrison, who attacked the rim, drawing the foul as she buried a layup, tying the game at 54-54 after the free throw.
Mariners found their own answer with 31 seconds to go, as Jones nailed a three-pointer to put Mitchell ahead once again. Becker was unable to answer and was forced to foul, as the visitors escaped with the win.
Becker is back on the court on Saturday when they play host to Elms College in a 1:00 p.m. NECC matchup. Mitchell travels to Lesley University for their next game on Sunday, with tip-off coming at 12:00 p.m.
