BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England out-shot Becker College by a 24-8 margin and scored four times in the opening period on the way to a 7-2 non-league women's ice hockey victory Friday afternoon (Jan. 8) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Winners of five of their last six outings, the Nor'easters moved over the .500 mark to 6-5-2, while the Hawks suffered their sixth consecutive setback to dip to 1-11-0.
Marissa Clifford-Biederman got the home team on the board just over two minutes into the opening period, and UNE doubled its lead at the 5:20 mark when Gabby Crugnale netted her first of two on the night. Shannon Smith made it 3-0 just before the halfway mark of the period, before Gabriella Moscato established Big Blue's four-goal cushion with 1:01 left in the frame.
Crugnale struck again to begin the second stanza with 5:29 gone and give the Nor'easters a 5-0 advantage.
UNE bounced right back three minutes later with Kimberly Gosselin converting on a power play to make it 6-1, and Julianne Sheehan capped Big Blue's scoring output with 1:11 to go in the second.
The six-goal spread lasted all of 33 ticks, as Coons connected once again with Martin and Aiello to register the Hawks' second tally.
Samantha Scobee turned away all 10 shots that came her direction in the third, and totaled 26 saves to get the win for the Nor'easters. Melissa Boudreau and Emily Corrales supported the UNE attack with two assists each.
In goal for Becker, Julia Johnson posted 26 stops over the initial 34:26 and Madison Rigby closed with 15 saves the rest of the way.
