Marlboro, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over Becker College Friday evening in non-conference action at the New England Sports Center.
Freshman Michaela Martin (Sheldon, VT) scored for Becker, but the Hawks dip to 2-13 overall.
Freshman Brooke McGreen, senior Megan Ofner and junior Megan Finlay each registered goals for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers improve to 8-8-2 on the season.
Martin got the Hawks on the board first, as she scored off an entrance pass from forward Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.) at 4:18 of the first period. Martin's wrist shot from the right circle was her first collegiate tally. The Pioneers best chance came off the stick of sophomore Taylor Moreland as the forward had a partial breakaway that was stopped by Hawks goaltender Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.). Johnson made 13 first period saves and finished the night with 43 stops.
Sacred Heart did all their damage in the second stanza. Finlay would tie the game with a power-play score at 7:13 of the second period. Less than two minutes later Sacred Heart would take the lead with an unassisted score from McGree, for the freshman's first of her career. Ofner would add an insurance goal with 4:23 remaining in the frame.
The teams would skate a scoreless third period for the 3-1 final. Senior Amanda Fontaine (Northfield, Mass.) made twelve saves for the win for Sacred Heart.
Both teams continue action Saturday, as the Pioneer host Becker College in a home-and-home weekend series, face-off is slated in Fairfield, Conn. at 4:00 p.m.
