Ice Hawks Soar Past Post In Season Opener

SHELTON, Conn. – The Becker College women's ice hockey team open the 2016-17 campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory over Post University on Friday afternoon.

Becker outshot the Eagles by a 47-17 margin in the game.

Freshman Brianna Luciani (Bellingham, Mass.) put Ice Hawks on the board 9:26 into the game when she tallied a shorthanded goal. Becker increased their lead to 2-0 just 2:09 later on a Baily Coons (Casper, Wyo.) goal.

Luciani struck again at the 11:29 mark of the second period with a power-play goal. The assists came from classmate Samantha Talmadge (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Michaela Martin (Sheldon, Vt.), lifting the Ice Hawks lead to 3-0.

Martin would net her first goal of the season 2:04 into the third period to make the score 4-0. Freshman Christie Gray (Oxford, Ohio) capped of the scoring with her first collegiate goal with 11:57 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goalie Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.) registered her first collegiate shutout after turning away 17 shots.

The Ice Hawks will return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to Franklin Pierce University for an 8:30 p.m. tilt with the Ravens.
