Lijana Carries Women's Lacrosse Past Lasell

Leicester, Mass.- Becker College broke a three game losing streak as the Hawks defeated Lasell College 15-13 in women’s lacrosse action.

Lasell jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage just 1:53 into the game when April McGrath (Willow Grove, Penn.) scored her fourth goal of the season. Andrea Ward (Hingham, Mass.) put the Lasers up 2-0 when she scored on an assist from Amanda Martin (Lowell, Mass.).

The Hawks got on the board with 25:42 remaining when Felicia Zalik (Oxford, Conn.) fed Karroll Barretto (Quincy, Mass.) for her ninth goal of the season. The Hawks tied the game at 21:26 when Nicole Lijana (Moorestown, NJ.) drove past the Lasell defense for her 27th goal of the season. Becker took the lead 21 seconds later when Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT.) scored her team leading 28th goal of the season. The Two teams continued their seesaw battle for the remainder of the first half, with Lasell holding an 8-6 lead at halftime. Andrea Ward finished the first half with five goals and an assist.

Becker came out on fire in the second as the Hawks scored the first six goals of the half.  Jennifer Ouellette (Merrimack, NH.) got things started when she made the score 8-7, with 25:49 remaining. Nicole Lijana tied the game at eight all when she tallied her third goal of the game. Freshman Vanessa Laureano (Dracut, Mass.) netted back to back unassisted goals as the Hawks took a 10-8 advantage.  After Lijana scored her fourth goal of the game, Morgan Hazen scored on an assist from Laureano, putting the Hawks in front 12-8.

Lasell refused to go down easily. Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) put the Lasers within three when she scored on a free position shot. After Becker increased their lead back to four, April McGrath scored her third goal of the game, making the score 13-10.  Slattery put the Lasers within two with another free position shot. After the two teams exchanged goals again, Andrea Ward put the Lasers within one on an unassisted goal with 1:34 left in the game. With Becker clinging to a one goal lead Nicole Lijana scored on a feed from Vanessa Laureano with ten seconds remaining, capturing the win for the Hawks.

Lasell goalie Lindsay Cahoon (Falmouth, Mass.) made 13 saves in a losing effort. With the loss, Lasell fell to 7-7 on the season. Lindsay Peluso (Dudley, Mass.) made 11 saves as the Hawks improved to 3-7 on the season.
