Hazen & Mossey Earn Second Team All NEWLA Honors

The New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance has announced its post-season honors. In a vote by the conference coaches, Castleton senior midfielder Marie Van Der Kar was named NEWLA Offensive Player of the Year. Van Der Kar led the league with 29 draw controls and was second grabbing 22 ground balls ranking in the top 10 nationally in both categories. The senior scored 21 goals with six assists leading the Spartans to a 6-1 mark in conference play.

Bridgewater State defender Bethany Bush was honored as the NEWLA Defensive Player of the Year. During conference play, the senior caused 22 turnovers and picked up 19 ground balls while scoring twice times and assisting on two others from her defensive position for the Bears.  

Bridgewater State's Katie Weber was named NEWLA Goalkeeper of the Year. The senior led the NEWLA in goals against average (7.90) and winning percentage (.938) and ranks second in minutes played (828) and fourth in save percentage (.458).

Bush and Weber led a Bears defense allowed a conference leading 5.86 goals per game and a perfect 7-0 record in league action.

Castleton first year attacker Amanda Flodstrom was chosen as the NEWLA Rookie of the Year. Flodstrom was the Spartans second leading scorer with 16 goals and added nine assist as Castleton finished 6-1 in league play.

Westfield State Rachel Dionne was selected the NEWLA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior defender has kept a 3.99 GPA while adding 14 goals and 15 assists during seven conference games earning her first team all-conference honors as well.

Bridgewater's Erika Smith was honored as the NEWLA Coach of the Year honors. Framingham State was honored with the Team Sportsmanship Award. NEWLA all-conference selections are determined by a vote of the conference coaches.
