Wicks Makes 18 Saves In Loss To RIC

LEICESTER, Mass. – Sophomore attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, R.I.) scored seven goals with an assist to lead visiting Rhode Island College to a 16-9 win over host Becker College in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at Alumni field. The Anchorwomen of Rhode Island even their season record at 4-4 while the Hawks of Becker see their two game winning streak snapped to drop to 3-8.

Rhode Island junior attacker Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, R.I.) had a spectacular evening with five goals, five assists and four ground balls. Junior midfielder Jessalyn O'Neill (North Providence, R.I.) added two goals and an assist. Junior netminder Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the win, finishing the night with eight saves.

For Becker, junior attacker and defending NECC women's lacrosse player of the week Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) had four goals and an assist, continuing her great season. Junior midfielder Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.) contributed two goals with four groundballs, while freshman attacker Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. Becker freshman goalie Shelby Wicks (Shaftsbury, Vt.) tallied 18 saves, setting a new personal best mark for saves in a game.

Rhode Island put pressure on Becker throughout the first half, as the Hawks struggled to clear the ball. The Anchorwomen quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead, led by three goals from Ricci in the first twelve minutes. Becker juniors Mossey, Boucher and Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) each scored to cut the lead to two goals at 5-3, but Rhode Island soon reasserted itself, scoring five consecutive goals, capped off by a strike from Signoriello with 7:57 remaining in the first half. Both teams fought back and forth in the last eight minutes of the opening period, with the Anchorwomen going into halftime with a 14-6 lead. Signoriello entered the break with four goals and five assists. Rhode Island outshot Becker 30-9 in the first half.

Just 57 seconds into the second period, Rhode Island built on its lead with another goal from Signoriello. The game tightened after that, but Becker could never close the gap.

Rhode Island travels to Worcester State University on Thursday for a game at 7:00 p.m. Becker will be back on the field on Saturday when the team hosts Bay Path College at 10:00 a.m.
