Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener Over AMC

PAXTON, Mass.—Sophomore Jodi Theriault (Woodstock, Conn.) laced a free kick into the back of the net just 4:30 into the first half, as the Becker College women’s soccer team defeated Anna Maria College by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at AMCAT Field. With the opening day loss, the AMCATS fall to 0-1, while the Hawks jump out to a 1-0 start to the 2010 season.

Theriault paced the Hawks with three shots on the day, but it was her first shot that made the difference. The sophomore midfielder went top shelf when she blasted a free kick from 20 yards out. AMC goalkeeper Tabitha Ruggeri (Southbridge, Mass.) was able to leap and get a hand on the shot, but wasn’t able to stop it from entering the goal.

The AMCATS settled down and gained momentum after the early goal, but were unable to break through against Hawks’ goaltender Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.). AMC controlled the ball, outshooting Becker 11-6 on the day, but Boucher was able to answer the call each time, making seven saves en route to earning the shutout victory.

Anna Maria’s best opportunity came late in the first half when junior Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) put a hard shot on net that was turned away by Boucher. The rebound came to junior Marissa McCann (Webster, Mass.) who missed wide left to end the threat.

Hevy led the AMCATS with four shots, including three on net, while junior Alexa Hare (North Brookfield, Mass.) and freshman MacKenzie Levertue each added two shots of their own.

The Hawks will return to action next Wednesday when they host Mass. Maritime at 4:00 pm, while the AMCATS look to rebound when they travel to take on Mitchell College at 4:00 pm this Friday.
