Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team lost a 9-0 decision to conference foe Becker College on Wednesday evening at New London High School.
The Hawks remained unbeaten in NECC play at 4-0 and improved to 7-4 overall. The Mariners dropped to 0-7 overall on the season and 0-4 in conference play.
Becker started the match by sweeping the doubles portion in convincing fashion. Freshmen Julie Felts (Carver, Mass.) and Erica Fazio (Waterford, Conn.) gave the Hawks resistance at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-5 to the duo of Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, Conn.) and Shawna McNally (Worcester, Mass.). Becker took the other two doubles matches by 8-1 finals.
In singles play, the best match of the day came at the No. 1 spot between Felts and Megan Nessen (Levittown, Pa.). Nessen captured the first set by a 6-1 final, but Felts rallied back to win the second set by the same score. In the deciding third set, Nessen broke serve three times en route to a 6-1 victory.
The Hawks took the rest of the singles matches in straight sets. Laura Mimms (Ashland, Mass.) won at No. 2 singles over Fazio (6-0, 6-0) while Stryker and McNally picked up victories at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, over senior Miah Manning (6-1, 6-0) and freshman Julie Embley (6-0, 6-0).
