CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second time this season, the outcome of the women's tennis match between Becker College and Lesley College came down to the last match on the court. Once again, the Hawks came out on top as they prevailed, 5-4, on Thursday (October 8).
Becker improved to 7-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference and 8-7 overall. The seven conference wins are the most for Becker since 2012 when it went 8-2. The Leopards dropped to 2-11 overall and 2-5 in the league.
The Hawks had to dig themselves out of a 2-1 hole following doubles. Becker's only doubles win came at number three where freshman Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and senior Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) topped Courtney Goggin and Hannah Levensailor, 8-4.
Lesley picked up an 8-1 win at number one as Caroline Kiddie and Theresa Pereira bested junior Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and senior Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.). The closest doubles match went LC's way when Diana Watson and Frances De Leon squeaked out an 8-6 win against Jacqueline Andrade (Somsert, Mass.) and Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) at number two.
With the match on the line, Becker got the deciding point when Wodell rolled through Goggin, 6-0, 6-0 at number six. Leger breezed past Watson at number four, 6-1, 6-1. Andrade won a first set tiebreaker then cruised in the second set to her 7-6, 6-1 win over De Leon at number two. Sophomore Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) brought home a victory at number five when she beat Rosie Heller, 6-3, 7-5.
The Leopards' two singles wins came at numbers one and three. Kiddie beat Lord 6-4, 6-0 and Pereira bested Smith, 6-3, 6-2.
Becker will try to hand Regis (Mass.) its first conference loss of the season when its plays host to the Pride on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Regis won the first meeting of the year, 9-0.
