Turner’s 11 kills not enough as Women’s Volleyball falls in opener

Newton, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team got their 2016 season started on Thursday evening with a 20-25, 22-25, 27-25, 21-25 loss at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts.

The Hawks of Becker (0-1) were led by senior middle blocker Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) who tallied 11 kills and two blocks in the effort. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J. / Bronx) came up with seven kills while freshman outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional) led the defense with 18 digs. Junior setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) set up the offense with 14 set assists and two service aces.

Down two sets to none, Becker held off a sweep in the third set, winning four of the final five rallies to take the frame 27-25. They were unable to capitalize in the fourth set, however, and Mount Ida took the win.

The Mustangs of Mount Ida (1-0) were led by junior outside hitter Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass. / Agawam) with 23 kills.

Becker will be back on the court on Saturday when they compete in the Worcester City Tournament hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Hawks will square off against the Lancers of Worcester State University in their 11:00 a.m. opener. Mount Ida hosts Daniel Webster College and Lyndon State on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
